Garage construction vs. Garage door operating system - the most important information

Are you planning to buy a garage door? Find out what type of system will be suitable for your garage.

The purchase of a garage door is a decision that we make once in several, a dozen years or even several decades. So it must be well thought out - not only in terms of the aesthetics of the product itself, but also in terms of its usability. The thickness of the panels in a sectional gate and the way it is operated play a major role in this regard. No matter what type of garage door we choose (sectional, roll-up), we must pay attention to the structural capabilities of our garage. This is because it may turn out that not all system options will be suitable for it. Of greatest importance is the height of the lintel and the width of the side walls. Below are the most important parameters that we must pay attention to when placing an order.

Sectional garage doors

Sectional gates are an unquestionable sales hit. Thanks to the large construction possibilities, the option of using automation and very good insulation parameters, this solution is chosen by most customers. The wide range of solutions used in sectional garage doors makes it possible to install them in almost any room. A huge advantage of these garage doors is also the color matching (more than 40 colors of veneers and varnishing in RAL colors, RAL Structure) to the design of the rest of the joinery. A wide range of decors, glazing and the possibility of embossing the gate panels emphasizes the individual character of the product, making it a unique decoration of the building facade.

Roll-up garage doors

Roll-up door is another proposal for car garages. The main difference between this solution and a sectional door is the way the garage opening is closed. A sectional door (as the name suggests) is made of connected panel segments. The polyurethane foam filling, which is located between the galvanized sheet shells, guarantees good insulation of the room against low temperatures and outside sounds. The roller door, on the other hand, is an ideal solution for facilities where it is not possible to install ceiling guides - an integral part of sectional doors. The curtain of the roller garage door is rolled up on the door shaft,

Garage door sizes

Being at the stage of choosing a garage door, as a rule we already have the building in which it will be installed ready. However, it is best to think about the size of the garage already at the stage of preparing the construction project. Deciding on a two-car garage with a wide garage door not only ensures easy entry by car, but also the possibility of free use of the space where we store our recreational equipment (such as bicycles) or garden equipment. The downside of this solution is that the interior of the garage cools down more quickly in the winter on the way out with the car.

Thermals under control

Depending on the location of the garage, we must also remember about the thermal insulation of the entire structure. If the garage is detached, protection against heat loss is not so important. So the optimal choice for garages located outside the building may be sectional doors with a panel thickness of 40 mm or roll-up doors. The case is completely different in garages built into the body of the house. The garage adjacent to the house should be heated, so that it does not cause cooling of the interior. An excellent solution in such a case will be a sectional door with a 60 mm thick panel and seals around the perimeter of the door.

What kind of sectional gate guide to choose?

What type of guidance should our sectional door have, depends on the type of development of the room itself. In the offer of DAKO sectional doors we can distinguish 4 basic types of guidance: ST, LHF, LHR and N. Below are the differences between them:

Track types Lintel height Torsion springs mounting location

Type of guide rails

ST

Panel 40 mm: 350 mm
Panel 60  mm: 370 mm

Lintel Horizontal-singular
LHF

Panel 40 mm i 60 mm: 220 mm

Lintel Horizontal-double
LHR

Panel 40 mm: manual door– 100 mm automated door–150 mm

At the end of double level guides Horizontal-double
N Panel 40 mm: used in garages when there may not be a lintel or side walls

In vertical guide angles

Horizontal-double

The most interesting of the solutions presented is undoubtedly the N-guided sectional door. This system allows the gate to be used in rooms where there may be no side walls or lintel. The tension springs in such a gate are hidden behind grilles, so it retains an elegant, minimalist appearance.

When choosing the right guide, it is also important to keep in mind the limitations that arise from the particular type of sectional gate. Both the thickness of the gate panel and the way the gate is operated can be significant.

Where will a roll-up door work well?

As we mentioned earlier, the roller door is a solution that will work especially in areas where it is not possible to install horizontal guides used in sectional doors. The roller door by its appearance resembles an external roller shutter. Its installation also looks similar. In this solution, the garage must be equipped with a small lintel, to which the gate box will be attached. For a gate box with a height of 300 mm, the lintel must be min. 310 mm high, while for a 360 mm box, the height of the lintel is 370 mm. As for the width of the sides, on the other hand, in the case of a roller door, the dimension on each side must be 96 mm.
