Decorations for the front door and windows remind the household members and neighbours that Christmas is approaching and get them in the mood for celebration. In today’s guide, we’ve put together some practical ideas for enhancing your woodwork with elegant accents to make the time waiting for Christmas even more special!
Front door decoration
Decorating the front door is a custom that arrived in Poland from Anglo-Saxon countries and has gained great popularity among compatriots over the centuries. Traditionally, doors are decorated from the first Sunday of Advent, which marks the symbolic start of the holiday season.
What decorations would be a good choice for a door?
-
Traditional Advent wreaths
Ready-made or woven wreaths of fragrant coniferous twigs, decorated with pinecones, twinkling bows or dried fruit are our first choice and a classic decoration that evokes winter associations at first glance. You can add dried orange slices, sponges dotted with cloves or cinnamon sticks to give them an intense, spicy fragrance -
Lights, lamps and LED decorations
Battery-powered lights in the form of an unrolling chain are a simple, versatile and highly effective way to bring festive sparkle around your doors and throughout the facade with a single flick. There are a number of ways of mounting them – you can wrap them around the wreath or fix along the frame. Using LED lights in coloured covers is also a good alternative offering a diffused light effect. -
Pendants, chains and figurines
The door can be embellished with additional decorations such as Christmas tree chains, dried fruit baskets or straw figurines. By additionally spraying your entrance door with a snow imitation spray, you can create a unique look that greets your guests with a festive spirit right from the doorstep. Invite the younger members of the household to join in the fun too!
Windows in a holiday mood
Christmas decorating fever shouldn’t leave out the windows either. How to style window openings, including those with roller shutters, so they catch the eye and build atmosphere?
- Set candles and lanterns on windowsills. Commercially available candles in a variety of styles – from the more classic to those in a minimalist design – or lanterns are a surefire hit. It's important to place the candleholders or lanterns on a stable base, to avoid placing them in the overlap of the blinds and to ensure safety if using real candles.
- Switch on the light garlands! For windows with external roller shutters, lightweight LED chains placed along the window frames or pendant lights attached on tape will work perfectly. This way, the light decorations will not interfere with the function of the roller shutters and at the same time will add Christmas charm to our interiors.
- Let loose with artificial glitter or snow imitation spray. It’s excellent for creating unique patterns on glazing, and when applied and removed correctly, it won’t harm your windows. We recommend using hand-cut templates and using the rest to decorate already prepared wreaths and decorations.
Christmas ornaments on doors and windows are a beautiful way to bring a magical atmosphere into our homes, no matter how we plan to spend Christmas. Well-chosen decorations will draw attention from afar, foster a celebratory mood and remind us of what is most wonderful about Christmas.
