Winter garden meaning an exotic holiday in your home all year round

Travelling in the middle of winter to exotic countries at any moment? Unreal? By stepping over the threshold of the winter garden you can move to the hot climate of the tropics without leaving your home.

A unique place in your home

What is a winter garden? It is a room different from all others, and at the same time extremely versatile. It can become a place for relaxation, a dining room, a conservatory, an office, or a meeting room with family and friends. A winter garden significantly increases not only the usable area of a building, but also its value giving it prestige. This non-standard room mostly aims to bring us closer to nature, which positively affects our mood and well-being.

A room full of greenery

The winter garden, is often called an evergreen room. All this is due to the plants you will find in it. Warm-weather palms and citrus, blooming orchids or climbing ivies. Continuous access to natural sunlight and warmth provide excellent conditions for the growth of flowers that do not naturally occur in our climate. As a result, we can enjoy greenery all year round, regardless of the weather conditions outside. Being in a room that is practically entirely glazed has another advantage, which we will appreciate especially in winter. Maximum illumination by natural sunlight affects our body, creating endorphins, also known as hormones of happiness. A moment of relaxation among natural greenery and with the sunshine will give us positive energy for the days to come.

Designing a winter garden

If we are just going to build our house, the creation of a winter garden should be taken into account already at the design stage. An architect will help us design a room with the right parameters, measure the load-bearing capacity of the structure and get the right thermal insulation parameters that will affect the entire building. In the case of the construction of a winter garden next to an existing building, whether we will be enclosing a terrace or building a new room, we must remember to report the work to the authorities. A properly designed and decorated winter garden will not only be a place where you will find peace and tranquility, but can also become a space for gatherings with family and friends. Therefore, it is important that it not only provides warmth, but also silence.

The best combination - glass and aluminum

Once the formalities are settled, we can move on to the construction stage and choose the right supplier of glazing from which we will create our winter garden. The best material will undoubtedly be aluminum joinery. Aluminum, thanks to its relatively low weight and large construction possibilities, is perfect for the construction of large glazing. Aluminum structures are also characterized by high durability and resistance to weather and moisture. This will allow us to maintain the quality and unique appearance of the garden for years to come. Another advantage of aluminum structures is their great thermal insulation. In premises built practically entirely of a combination of glass, aluminum and patio doors, adequate thermal insulation is extremely important.

Easy communication

When designing a winter garden, we should also not forget about the way of transition to the interior of the house. Due to the fact that the garden provides constant access to natural light, we should opt for a large glazing, connecting it with the rest of the house which will also make it sufficiently illuminated. The best solution that can separate the garden from the rest of the house will undoubtedly be accordion doors, which we can find in DAKO's offer. Their unconventional way of opening allows you to get unlimited passage light, and the door wings practically do not take up any space in the room. This gives the impression of a full connection between the house and the garden, creating a unique space in the building. Another solution that we can use as a separation between the conservatory and the building are HST sliding patio doors of the DA-77 or DA-51 series. Thanks to the use of a low threshold, the passage between rooms does not cause problems for children, the elderly or the disabled. The last, economical option is a combination of fixed glazing and patio doors. Note, however, that this solution is characterized by the least comfortable operation.

A winter garden is undoubtedly one of the most interesting rooms we can design in our home. The unique arrangement and bright interiors can be adapted in any way we like, creating even more usable space in the house. However, when undertaking the construction of it, we must remember about proper thermal insulation and high strength of the structure from which we will make it.

Support for home thermal upgrades with National Retrofitting Scheme.

In early 2022, the Irish Government introduced a package of grants that will support homeowners to make energy efficiency improvements to their homes. The assumptions behind the scheme are impressive. By 2030, under the scheme, funding is planned for 500,000 buildings to enable them to meet the B2 Builiding Energy Scheme (BER) standard. The changes made to the National Energy Modernisation Plan aim to make the investment more popular with the country's residents. According to the announcements, this is one of the largest aid programmes in the world.
